Project Overview

Bartram’s Garden is a National Historic Landmark located at 5400 Lindbergh Blvd. It is the oldest surviving botanic garden in North America. This garden was originally founded in 1728 by John Bartram and is now currently being taken care of by the John Bartram Association. Their mission is to “protect and enhance the landmark Bartram’s Garden and House; advance the Bartram legacy of discovery, gardening, and art; and inspire audiences of all ages to care for the natural world.”, and with that they are always constantly trying to bring new innovations into the garden. As a result of this, Bartram’s Garden has several plans for the next several upcoming years such as having a handicap accessible dock and horse stable built.

The purpose of this project is to design an efficient horse stable that will not only house several horses but will also be able to turn horse manure into fertilizer. The site for where the horse stable is to be built has already been predetermined. The horse stable is currently being discussed with Bartram’s Garden and is not readily available at this time. Ideally, the proposed horse stable should be able to follow the listed requirements of: being able to accommodate all of the Concrete Cowboy’s of Philadelphia’s horses, being eco-friendly, have floors where horse manure can be easily scooped up, accommodate appropriate temperature for the horses, and be able to withstand the changing Philadelphia weather. Other requirements given by the client would also have to be accounted for. The main challenge of the design would be designing a completed design within a ten weeks time period.
